The EcoDimmer is a very unique product that allows one to control 8 low-wattage (12V/DC) LED lights
or appliances via a keypad, push-buttons, internal scheduling, and/or automation software
(like ECS).
Applications include hardwired/automated lighting (commercial & residential) and off-grid lighting
(RVs, cabins, boats, solar systems
, etc). To our knowledge, this is the only hardwired/DC lighting
system that can be automated. A few AC systems are available, but all are very expensive (over $2000).

Why LEDs ?
Though LEDs are more expensive than incandescents, they use less than 7% of the energy, and last some 60 times longer.
For example, this 4W LED bulb is as bright as a 60W incandescent. And unlike fluorescents, LEDs contain no mercury.

Note: The EcoDimmer itself uses a maximum of only 3.8 watts.

Incandescent vs LED
60W Incandescent 4W LED
Life Span
1,000 hours 60,000 hours
Number of bulbs used over 60,000 hours 60 1
Bulb cost per 60,000 hours $40 (60 bulbs at 67¢ each) $44
kWh of electricity used over 60,000 hours 3600 kWh 240 kWh
Cost of Electricity (60,000 hours at 10¢ per kWh) $360 $24
Total cost $400 $94
Total savings for 60,000 hours (166 days)
$306

Colored LEDs are great for attractive/stylish accent lighting. And unlike other bulbs, they require no color lenses.
Note that colored LEDs are clear when turned off.
So if you order one by mail, don't return it as the wrong item until you have plugged it in :-).

Note:: The dimmer module used in the EcoDimmer ("PWM8x") can be controlled directly by ECS.
But without EcoDimmer's Input Module (which intelligently monitors and responds to button activity),
one cannot easily dim to a desired level via a single button (as described below).

Usage
Using the EcoDimmer could not be easier:
To invert (off→on, on→off), tap the button.
To brighten, push/hold until the light brightens to the desired level.
To dim, tap once and push/hold until light dims to the desired level.
To turn all loads off, tap any button 2 times.
To turn all loads on, tap any button 3 times.

Additonal capabilities:

  • Scheduling (requires Clock Battery):
The EcoDimmer can control any loads per simple time-based schedules (see "Schedule" section of the Setup screen).
Dawn/Sunrise/Sunset/Dusk times are calculated per your latitude/longitude.
  • Dedicated dim/bright button control is also supported (whereby one button brightens and another dims).
  • Dimming may be disabled for buttons that control off/on devices.
  • Any button can control to any desired load(s).
  • When brightening, lights are pleasantly ramped up to the desired level in <= 1.5 seconds.
  • Ramping increments and speed and are adjustable.

Dimmable denotes if the loads controlled by this button can be dimmed.
If not, adjustments are limited to OFF/ON, and all ramp-related settings are ignored.

Initial ramp direction denotes what to do if button is held down without a prior tap.
If button is tapped first, then ramping is done in the opposite direction.
This setting is applicable only for TAP buttons.

Ramp increment denotes how much to ramp per adjustment.

Ramp delay denotes the time to wait in between ramp adjustments.

The Load 1...8 checkboxes denote which loads are to be controlled by each button.

Power supply requirements
You will need a 12V power source with sufficient amperage to drive the maximum # of concurrent loads at their maximum level.
For example, a 3W lamp draws .25 amps (12V x .25A = 3W). So if you had 8 such lamps, you would need a 2A power source (8 x .25).

A/C power supplies (AC→DC)
If you don't have access to a 12V power source, an AC/DC adapter will be required.
Note: High-amperage power supplies can be quite expensive. So if you need a lot of power, you should consider using
multiple low-amperage models wired in parallel (which will increase available amperage while retaining the same voltage).

The Input Module (that monitors and responds to button activity) and Dimmer Module are housed in a separate
enclosures, so that they may be placed in separate locations if desired. They are connected via a standard serial
(RS232) cable (which can be run up to 100 feet).

Buttons (installation and selection)
For wall-mounted button installations, we recommend round buttons that are bush-mounted (vs snap-ins),
and standard/blank wall plates (like this and this). To mount, drill a hole (of the same size as the button insert)
into the center of the plate, insert the button, and apply/tighten the bushing (washer) on the back side.

Note: If you prefer a keypad to wired buttons (or wish to control loads via both), we offer the keypad option,
whereby we install a Xantech 598-00 8-Button Keypads on the top of the Input Module with a decora bezel.
This makes an attractive table-top unit (pictured here).
